If you're writing a letter to a doctor, should you waste time restating facts he probably knows perfectly?

I have to write an essay for class, and i just don't believe i'm in the position to tell him any of the facts, I just want to get straight to point and not restate the obvious, i just need a second opinion

If it is an essay to show what you have learned and what you know, I would restate the facts. However, given that it is a letter you may want to consider leaving out the most obvious facts but including enough so that it is evident that you know what you are talking about.
