My 4 year old lab constantly will paw at me, my legs, my kids...and it hurts. She does it even after I smack her paw and say "NO". I have been consistent every time she does it and she still hasn't gotten the messege. As soon as you look at her, she will come over and keep putting her paw up on you. She will do it to anyone...and she has been since she was 1 when I taught her how to shake! I have tried may things to stop it but nothing is working. Any dog whisperers out the who can help me solve this annoying compulsion?

every time your dog paws at you, turn the other way
eventually if she doesnt get a reward IE YOUR ATTENTION
she will stop,
keep in mind, yelling, hitting her, and making a fuss is POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
if she comes up to you and lifts her leg off the ground, turn away and be totally silent, close your eyes if you have to and keep turning away until she gives up and make no noise.
when she walks away make a calm fuss and if she tries to paw you ignore her and turn away, only give her attention when she is looking away

this is not a compulsion, it is a dominance issue. she is controling the affection in this relationship you need to get everyone on the same page and keep her locked up if you cant trust the person in the house to do as you are doing

it works

My father has the same problem with his Shepard/rottie mix....and it happened when he learned to shake too.....what we all have been trying (him and anyone that comes over) is when he does it we tell him to go lie down and everyone has to ignore him for 5 minutes......its starting to work for him..........you could try it......is you lab won't stay away or lie-ing down....banish him to another room.........he wants the attention he gets when he does it..............good luck and hope that this works for you
