The 5 month old I started babysitting about 2 months ago screams all the time. I have over 10 years babysitting experience and am a child development major, so I like to think I know babies pretty well, but I've never seen anything like this. She screams, not cries, for 7 or more hours a day. Her face is bright red, the veins in her head are throbbing, and she writhes around, arching her back. She never naps and she only stops screaming to take her botttle. I have tried everything like burping her, holding her in all different positions, rocking her, walking with her, singing, playing classical music, putting her on a blanket on the floor on her tummy or her back, so on and so on...Nothing ever works. I know it isn't me because she does this with her parents, grandparents, everyone. They have had her checked out at the doctor, and she is fine. What could be wrong? Epilipsy? Mental Problems? Oh, and I don't know if it is relevant, but she sneezes at least 10 times an hour.

I am an obgyn RN and there is something definitely wrong...it could be ear infections, or some sort of pain. There is a pain that sometimes causes young children to scream in pain all the time...it's a pain in the face, and it goes untreated ALOT!!!!! I am not a pediatricians nurse...so I don't know exactly...but that is SO not normal. I sub in a pediatricians office and there is something majorly wrong. How can the parents let that go on?

It sounds like sinus, ear, or allergy pain. That's really horrible they're letting her suffer like that. Wouldn't you scream if you had to sneeze 10 times an hour...her throat is probably raw and her chest is probably sore from all the sneezing!

Good luck!

It's hard to say without actually seeing her, but it could be colic. This would cause babies to scream because of the pain they are in. If this is the case though there is nothing that you can really do for her, anything that can be done would have to be up to her parents. You might want to suggest a change in formula, it may help. Other times medication is needed to help relieve the gas.
You can try to place her on her back and rub her tummy. Or while she is on her back take her legs and bend her knees up to her chest(like the fetal position). As I'm sure you know you have to be gentle while doing this, but apply a little bit of pressure. If there is a gas build up it can help to move it out.

That's a bit strange. Maybe they should get a second or third opinion. Because you can never be to safe with small children that can't even talk and express their pain. And maybe look into autism's early signs. The more informed you and the parents are the better the health of the baby will be.

might be a nervous condition. i wouldn't know about that. Do they give her colic drops. She might just have a simple case of gas. If her parents don't give her colic drops, I would go get her some and sneak them to her when I am watching her. If it helps and probably will, turn her parents on to them. A lot of babies still have colic at her age and people just shove a bottle in their mouths to quiet them. She also might be teething. Cutting teeth really hurts.
BTW: being the tear duct and sinuses are all connected, the sneezing might be from crying.

Has this poor child ever been tested for any allegories? It sounds like sinus and head aches
