because people drink it to start with. If no one would ever touch it, no one would ever get addicted..If you know someone with an addiction, groups for addditions might help, or find something else to replace it..like working out, so everytime you want alcohol, work out, til' you no longer want it. Not to sound all weird or anything, but cast your burdens on the lord, and you'll be fine..or whoever is addicted.=]

Wow! This is a huge question that has not yet been completely answered by science.

There is some evidence that alcohol addiction is genetic. That persons with certain inherited genes are more likely to become alcoholics. Go to a few AA meetings and you will hear the family histories that would seem to be a sort of proof of this.

Others feel that alcoholism is just like any other drug addiction and that the addict continually seeks the "perfect high" of the drug while really just increasing the addiction.

One thing I can tell you is that there is no "cure" for alcoholism. The only effective "treatment" invloves complete abstinance from alcohol. If an alcoholic quits for any period of time then attempts to again drink like a "normal" person, they soon fall right back into the old habits and ways. They find themselves getting drunk just as much as they did before they quit.

If you want a much more indepth explination, get a copy of the book "Alcoholics Anonymous" and read it. You will be awakened to the total dispare that active alcoholics often face.

i imagine that people get addicted to alcohol for the same reason people get addicted to anything. i believe this has something to do with a neurotransmitter that elicits a positive response...maybe like dopamine or seratonine or something. when you cut back on alcohol after getting use to these neurotransmitters, you can go thru withdrawals and all.

It has been shown to be genetic. Having an occasional drink doesn't get you addicted. Getting drunk doesn't get you addicted.
It is when you drink constantly that the addiction kicks in. Your brain gets re-wired.
