Carpentry was a skilled vocation. The original Greek word used for this can also be translated Mason. So, we really not sure that Jesus was not a Stone Mason, which would probably be a more sought after skill, seeing they did not have many trees. Kings would Import their wood from other countries, it was very expensive. Not a commodity of the poor.

There were no factories or mass-production then. Everything that you needed to live was made by somebody's hands. So yes, I'm sure that carpentry was a skilled and honorable vocation then- and still is.
