Has anyone asked why the Islamic extremists went to war with us.
If you Know the answer to that and you know that those same Islamic extremists are the insurgents in Iraq, than why would anyone ask why we are there?

Because those asking rarely really want to know...it is merely an opportunity to segue into yet a nother America is evil/Bush is a criminal/Cheney is a madman/ rant.
These same folks never had diddly to say when Mr Clinton (whom I voted for first time (sorry!)), cost so many lived in Bosnia , embarrassed us in Haiti and shamed us completely in Somalia.
It seems war and death is quite exceptable when THEIR guy is at the helm...but an outrage when someone from a different party does it.

We went to war in Iraq to topple a regime (check) and to destory a hideout for Jihadists (err...not check). So why do Islamic extremists hate us? Many reasons, but I'll give you six. One, the general concept that the U.S. is a Christian nation. Two, Capitalism. Three, Democracy. Four, the drain of Arab oil (sold by other Arabs...yeah, I know its retarded). Five, women's rights. Six, jealousy about the above.

Islamic cultures are really an enigma. They are as different as they are difficult. There is a well publicized rift between the factions of Islam. Shias hate the Sunnis with as much violence as there was (is) between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland. Throw in Wahabism and other more extreme factions, and that makes the battles between the different denominations of Christianity look tiny.
We are in the middle of a religious war...and somehow, that needs to be sorted out. Remember the phrase, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend"? That doesn't apply in the Islamic world when we are involved.
If anyone can figure out 100% who is a terrorist or not just be looking at them, let the gov't know...otherwise there is no way to tell who is a terrorist or just a devout Muslim.

I think the better question is what are we trying to accomplish in Iraq now? and what is the best way to go about it?
I actually do know that there is a fallacy in your question. the Islamic extremists who went to war with us were not based in Iraq. the Terrorists were mainly Saudi Arabians who had been trained in Afghanistan. that has nothing to do with Iraq.
Iraq was about
1. weapons of mass destruction
2. removing Saddam from power
3. having a democratic government i Iraq that would be a shining example of what democracy can do in the middle east.

all three of these goals have been met. the problem is that the democracy is corrupt and divisive. This is allowing a power void that is actually causing America to be less safe from terrorists, because they are taking advantage of the chaos and anarchy we created to set up new training camps

So why did we invade and occupy Iraq ? Did we go to create a US friendly puppet government ? Touch off a civil war ? Was it oil? WMDs ? I don't need to ask why Islamic extremists are at war with us. We create these enemies all over the world by exploiting third world nations for their national resources, interfering in their domestic politics, aiding dictators and puppet totalitarian states and showing little respect if any for other sovereign countries. Remember, all of the 9/11 hijackers came from countries in the Middle East that profess to be allies.

the extremist who attacked the usa were mostly from saudi arabia.

iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks or the larger war on terror.

i still have no idea why we are in iraq...

Actually, Iraq hasn't been the real front for quite some time now. We are still in Iraq for completely different reasons than what the answers above me might lead one to believe. I wish you morons would stop watching the television news media, and try finding out answers on your own instead of being fed this pile of garbage.

We didn't go to war with Iraq they went to war with us.
They didn't follow the UN.
Clinton and the rest believe he had WMDs.

I thought 1 9/11 should have been our wake up call.
I was wrong considering how liberals are acting.

It does not justify Bush lying to the American public and torturing prisoners in violation of the Geneva Convention.

That makes no sense. There are plenty of countries that would attack our troops if we overthrew their government whether they originally liked us or not.
