check first if your media player is able to play AVI files.
click Tools-->Options-->File Types-->see if Windows video file AVI is checked.
Try to play your video file again if it doesn't still plays, try to find on the web for different AVI players. If the AVI file still not plays maybe it is corrupted.
Oh check also your codecs. Try to explore the web...

download VLC Media Player, it can play any video format.
