It's amazing that people still get this wrong!

The owners of all motor vehicles registered after 1st January 1973 MUST pay for road tax in Great Britain, with a few exceptions (disabled drivers, agricultural vehicles, etc).

However, if the vehicle was registered before 01/01/73, you may apply for 'Historic Vehicle' classification. That tax disc is free.

Exemptions from paying vehicle tax.....

"The law requires that vehicle tax should be paid for any vehicle used or kept on a public road in the UK. Certain vehicles are exempt from paying vehicle tax, however, these vehicles still require to be taxed annually and are issued with a 'nil' or free tax disc."

"All vehicles except buses and lorries used commercially, that were constructed before 1 January 1973 may tax in the 'historic vehicle' tax class."

Further to Claire's answer. Another benefit to importing a classic car (over 25 years) to UK is that there is no tax duty.

So do feel free to look for an overseas classic too! The shipping costs are not all that expensive either.

I imported a car from HK to UK and door-to-door shipping was £800.
