they are called sink holes and they are cause by pumping deep carbon aquifiers ,those are natural underground water reservoirs, where the water does not return to if they are depleted
greedy and irresponsible consumers of water pump these dry and the resulting cavities colapse causing sink holes often a few miles deep .
also sometimes,as has happened in carolina i think .the cavities fill up with sewage ,which is impossible to get rid off,

one should only pump surface aquifiers because these can fill up again with the rains

wells? caves? faults? What is the nature of these holes? are they man-made? Man-holes :)? The ones in my back-yard were caused by my dog.
