What you need to look for is a camera that has low light sensitivity so that it doesn't need to use the flash in most circumstances- even indoors in normal light.

There are two ways to go here. 1. is a Digital SLR. They're big and fairly pricey. $600 and up.

Or, 2. a compact. The decision here gets very easy, very quickly, as only one brand has made compact cameras that are very good in low light (a.k.a. High ISO). The other good news is that not only are the Fuji F-series cameras excellent in low light, but they're also some of the best compact cameras around. Oh- and it gets even better. The Fuji F20 is available for $150-$170 if you shop around.

Good luck with your new pug. Oh, and trust me on this one. Get the Fuji F20.

You can't go wrong with an Olympus or Canon.

Don't worry about the flash. Besides, if there's enough lighting, you can simply turn the flash off.

Compact cameras are simple to use and carry around. Unless you're a prefectionist, don't go DSLR. Almost all digital cameras, except DSLR's, can also take a video with sound (very neat with puppies).

Check out www.dpreview.com to find a camera that looks good to you, and has a good video capability.

Check out the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS at least.

Digital cameras have flashes just like conventional film cameras. There is usually a setting to turn off the automatic flash. Since you are new to digitals I would advise a Kodak. You can get one pretty cheap at Walmart, and they are very user friendly. There is also a good group on Yahoo for Kodak digital cameras if you do need any help.
