As a dog lover, I was outraged to read about fur trims on clothing imported from China found to be dog fur, not fake fur. Before trying to change other countries, I look at what is happening in my own town (I'm in the US). Unwanted dogs are being killed in the shelters. Americans are supposed to be good to dogs. But we breed them then kill them. Not for fur, but for the fun of having puppies to play with. Can there ever be a law against breeding dogs without applying for some kind of permit? Why don't more people spay/neuter their dogs? Can we ban puppy mills?

Happycamper, I did not understand your answer. Or you did not understand my question? Your answer was not very friendly. How about supplying some helpful suggestion? I'm all ears. We all want to do the right thing, no? And be kind?

It's a never ending situation in this country. In my opinion there should be stiffer laws for spay and neutering dogs and cats. It is amazing too knowing how many people just "have" to get a puppy thinking that it will stay little for ever. A lot of them don't understand that one day the pup grows into a full size dog. That's when they aren't wanted any more. In my years of working with animals and also working in a shelter. The numbers were staggering every year in the amount of unwanted dogs we would take in. When a dog or cat was left with us, the person would have to give a reason on why they couldn't keep it. The majority of the time the reason would be that the dog got too big. People would come in and get rude with us about the "big deal" we would make on getting animals fixed. It's a problem that is never going to go away. It will continue to be a huge problem too.

This is a question that there may never be an answer for. The only way would be to change the laws regarding breeding. Most areas require dog licenses, so why is it so far fetched to think that there could be a license for breeding. You either have a breeding license by the time your puppy is 6 months old or you supply proof that your puppy has been spayed/neutered.

As far as banning puppy mills...as long as there is a demand, there will be a supply. Until there are enough people willing to step up and fight for changes, there will be dogs put to sleep who are no longer wanted or loved.

I dont think u should have to have a permit. My choc. lab and my neighbors rotti got together unexpectedly and had pups. Neither were fixed becasue they breed there rotti to other rottis and were looking to breed our lab to another lab but they jsut happened to take a walk. We had no problems getting rid of them though. If there was a permit we would be introuble for something that we couldn't have helped. We could have been fined or worse which doesn't make sense. And in most states puppy mills are illeagel (i live in the u.s. 2)) But your right there are so many UNWANTED dogs rinning wild attacking people other pets getting other pets sick. So why not put them to good use... fur. its not like they can be used for anything else, and if they are on the streets then that doesn't mean anybody wants them. But i do think its mean of how people breed them uncontrollably like an addiction and how people abuse there animals or have the heart to turn them out on the street. I jsut dont think its wrong of how the STRAYS r being used. No one else wants them.

I totally agree. I wish people would spay and neuter their animals, but either they don't really care, or they are breeders wanting to profit from it. I try to encourage anyone looking for a pet to go to the shelters, don't buy from breeders. There are so many good pets that need homes. I've even found that there are people who think a shelter pet is some how "beneath" them. They want an expensive dog to use as a showpiece to brag about how much they paid for it. Or people think that shelter pets aren't as smart, which is totally wrong. Talk to local shelters and vets in your area about what you can do to help solve the problem. Dogs aren't the only ones, cats have the same problems, maybe even worse.

This country can't even pass a law nationwide to stop People from aborting their own babies, do you think the US cares about animals.
It's an awful thing to say but it's true.
I do agree with you though animals are grossly and inhumanely treated and need as much protection as we can give them.
Take an active role in the Humane Society and help get the word out about Spaying and Neutering

I totally agree with Eric J. America is extremely selfish and just want the puppies and no responsibilty. I don't know if there could ever be a law against breeding dogs without a permit-people would do it anyway without a permit. I don't know why people don't spay/neuter their dogs either. As soon as my dog(s) get old enough they get spayed/neutered. I don't think we can ban puppy mills either. I wish we could and I totally agree with you.

People REALLY need to spay/neuter their animals. This will cut down the number of strays and unwanted animals drastically. The only way we can stop other countries from selling dog and other animal furs is to not buy it. If nobody buys their product they aren't going to manufacture and sell it anymore.

yeah, eric j's right, we are selfish. write to congress, or ur rep. they might be able to push a law making permits mandatory for breeders. Good luck!
