i have already paid the petition for change of status,affadavit of support andapplication for a visa fee.

I take it you were here on a b2 visa?
My husband applied for change of status in may of 2004, and has just received his permanent resident status (with no conditions).
After you get changed to a conditional resident, you will need to apply to remove the conditions. This usually takes about 8 months.

It depends on wot country you are from, wot country you are trying to enter (or have entered), whether or not you have previously held a visa from that (or any other) country, wot basis you have for seeking a visa, etc.
