Our pediatrician said use pineapple juice...is not as harsh as prune. I would not do laxatives or enemas because they cause cramps.

when my daughter had constipation i asked a pharmacist what was the best thing to give her. He told me to avoid using childrens laxatives and the like because it may make her dependent on it. He said to try the natural way such as giving her apples, prunes, pears, or fiberous cereal (such as frosted mini wheats broken up really small). you can either give fresh fruit or juice. prunes worked wonders with my daughter. he told me that if i tried the natural way and it didnt work, to use a suppository. they sell them at any drug store or even wal mart. i never had to use these with her, the natural way always worked but other people i know have used them and they work well. but dont treat it right away, give it at least a day or two of trying the natural things before you give a suppository.

My son, also 1, gets really bad constipation too! It sucks!
Here are some ideas for you to try, hopefully something will help
the poor little guy!

Massage your toddler ’s stomach. Infant massage of the stomach can relax baby’s tummy and intestines and promote digestion. Start at baby’s belly button and massage outward in clockwise circles.

Move baby’s legs in a cycling motion as your baby lies on her back. This can cause movement in the baby’s stomach muscles which stimulate the intestines to move.

Give your baby a warm bath. Combine massage with the bath to relax baby.

Apply some petroleum jelly around the outside of the anus in the bath to cause a movement.

Introduce more fruits and vegetables into your toddler's diet, especially prunes. Fruit juice works as well. Fiber will decrease constipation.

Baby constipation is a more common problem than many parents realize. Just as with adults, constipation in babies is characterized by having difficulty passing stools. On the other hand, symptoms of constipation cannot necessarily be recognized by how often the baby has a bowel movement because this changes from child to child and depends on the baby’s age as well. Newborns, for example, generally have bowel movements several times per day. In addition, a breastfed baby will tend to have softer stools while one fed artificial formula will have harder, darker stools. My son also had constipation when he was switching to reg. milk.
Try 1tb. of clear karo syrup to 6 oz. of water. I does work. Or you could also use 100 % pear juice, not concentrate. You can get this in the baby food section. I used both of these after trying other things for a week without any luck. I know what your feeling. I hope this works for you. Good luck!

I have a son who also experienced constipation, and the doctor said give him caro syrup (lite). It didn't work for him,but it may for your child. What I did was gave him prune juice with a little water added and that helped out GREAT! He hasn't been constipated in awhile since then. Try those, and see how that works out for you.

Our doctor recommended Mineral Oil. Just mix about a teaspoon in with the milk.
I also have tried prune juice-watered down, warm baths, and cheerios!

My son had this problem as well when I weened him off milk. His body has to get used to the new milk. You may want to try diluting the milk with a little water, just so he can get used to it. Also, try giving him 2% milk. If he continues with the constipation, water or apple juice will help.

Try giving him a warm bath.
Prune, apple or pear juice.
As nasty as it sounds, try rubbing some diaper rash cream around his anus. My doctor recommended this and it worked. It is supposed to stimulate the muscles. I did this with my first and she pooped within 20 minutes.
Best of luck to you and your little one.

Give him prune juice, a laxative, or chocolate milk.
