I have been fouling spark plugs for a while now. I put a different carb on it and it ran good at first. Now it is misfiring and shooting flames out of the pipe when I am driving, but not if I rev the engine. The plugs are a burnt black color when they foul if that helps. Also, the engine is running a little too rich. The carb is a solex 34 pict 3, how do I adjust it to not run so rich? Thanks in advance...

On the 34 PICT 3 solex carb the adjustments are pretty simple. On the left side of the carb where you have your two adjustments, one being the fuel voulume screw(big one) and the other one your air adjustment (small one) just bellow it. Gently and i mean gently...... turnboth of those screw adjustments all the way in clockwise until fully closed. Then turn open the (big one) a complete 2 1/2 turns and the (small one) 1 3/4 turns and you should be set. Beleive it or not it gets no simpler than that.........and dont listen to anyone about changing out the jets on a stock carb. Those carbs worked perfectly ok most the time without people jacking with it trying to make similar jet settings to an american made car. Volkswagens are a breed of its own, thats why us vw mechanics are far few in between. I hope this helps.

Did the car ever run correctly with the solex? One of the most likely causes of running rich is a too high float level. Other than that, make sure all the jets are standard size and tight.

The problem could be the injection tube in the carberator is not pointed towards the wall of the ventury. Take the top of your carberator off, and make sure that when you pull the throttle arm down, the stream of gas you see coming from the 'U' shaped tube(injection tube) is not squirting straight down the throat of the carb. It has to atomize by splashing off the side of the ventury.
Take a needle nose to gently aim the tip of the tube. Be careful not to loose the injection tube in your carb. Otherwise try rejetting.
Good luck.

You adjust the pressure of the fuel pump by sticking more of the paper gaskets underneath the pump where it mounts to the engine. Put about 3 or 4 new gaskets and see how it does. While you're at it check your fuel lines to see if there dry and cracked and replace them if needed.

the 34 is a bit too big for it , you need to drop your main jet size , a manual will explain how , better yet go to jcwhitney.com and find a smaller carb , perhaps a 32 , good luck
