I tell you what to do. If you can get to where you are knocking out 5 sets of 50 and you really want to build up your shoulders, upper back, chest, and forarms, start doing tri-cept pushups. You put your hands on the floor under your shoulders with your index and thumbs touching and go down and touch your chin to the floor inside of your fingers. This is a Navy exercise and buddy will it put some arms on you.

Push ups at shoulder width hand positions will primarily work your chest. Secondarily, they will work your triceps and to some degree your forearms. Push ups will really depends on your hand placement to determine what the push up will do for you.
If your hands are placed closer together under you, to form a diamond, the push up will work your triceps alot more. A wider hand position will work your chest more.
5 sets of 20 push ups will not do as much as you may think. Since you were not specific about what your goal was with these push ups I will assume your trying to pack on some muscle and increase your strenght. If this is the case, push ups have extremely limited muscle and mass building capabilities. I would suggest a gym membership where you can workout your muscles more thoroughly.
Remember, working out your chest and triceps by themselves may seem like a good idea. However, it is CRUCIAL that every body part be worked out for proportion. A lagging body part will be very detrimental in the long run and is much mor elikely to be injured.

It increases your chest and also it can improve your shoulder
but before performing push ups please try to buildup some muscle so that it doesnot strain you much
ofcourse for performing pushups we need some muscle .
And it is good that you are doing around 5 sets of 20 each.
but it is not that effective so better increase your count to 30-40 for each set to have a very good chest.
But be careful because if you are gonna do this in the wrong way your shoulder shape may change.
Finally feel free to ask me about some more if you have anymore doubts........

Nothing. Law of adaptation: Your body will build adaptations to "stress" (working out) you give it. 5 sets of 20 pushups over time wont do anything. To not allow adaptation in your body Volume or intensity in a daily workout has to be done. Ie: More weight less weight faster pushing/pulling. Volume: Do more of whatever it is your doing.

Well my oldest son was a very good wrestler. He could do sets of 100.. He wasn't very tall, but very muscular with shorter arms. Push ups are great.. sometimes they can be hard on your wrists. They can build your chest, shoulders and tricep muscles.

depends on your level of training. if you are new to exercise and/or strength training there will be some initial increases in strength/muscle. but this is more due to increased neuromuscular efficiency. results in strength and/or muscle will be short lived as the "load" that is used is constant. with a constant load the muscles have no reason to continually adapt and grow larger. at this point they are only good for increasing muscular endurance.
