My dog's breath smells like dead fish and I need to clean her mouth. I know her teeth need to be brushed, but the problem is that her mouth is too small for any of the toothbrushes at the pet stores, including the finger ones. I have read that hard food and some snacks will help keep her teeth and gums clean, but apparently they dont freshen her breath. I feed her science diet dry dog food and the only treats she will eat are rawhide sticks(she wont touch greenies). Neither help. She is a 2 year old yorkie/pom mix that weighs 3lbs and she isnt getting bigger, so this is something that needs to be taken care of...

I am getting desperate! Her breath is horrible. If anyone knows of a place to buy teeny doggie toothbrushes or some awesome techniques to clean her mouth, please share!

I do not want to take her to the vet to have her teeth cleaned every time. I would like to do it a few times per week at least, it could get expensive to take her to the vet.

Trust me, take your dog to the vet for an exam. Your dog's bad breath could be due to the fact that she might have a tooth disease and the only thing that can fix that is a dental with a tooth extraction.

Your vet then can also give you hints on what to do to help your dog's breath.

Also, just like with humans, dogs should get their teeth cleaned once a year to help fight tooth decay and diseases. Especially since they don't brush their teeth every day like humans do.

I would also sugest talking to your vet about putting your dog on a diet made by Science Diet called t/d. It's made with bigger kibble so that your dog HAS to chew the food in order to eat it. Dogs are known for gulping their food. Chewing helps remove tarter like brushing one's teeth.

But, like I said, take your dog in to get a dental ASAP. And yes, it will be probably be costly. At my clinic, we charge around $240 for a dental and extractions are anywhere from 20-60$. And that's on the low end. Shop around. Call several vet clinic's in your area and ask for prices. You will be amazed at how much they will probably vary in price. But, be careful. You will get what you paty for and a cheap dental doesn't mean it's the best dental. Ask the vet clinic what all their price includes.

Either way, you will be amazed at how much a dental will help.

they make very small toothbrushes. try www.petedge.com they had one that had 2 different size brushes on each end
chances are that she has some bad teeth that need to be removed. yorkies typically have bad teeth at an early age. it would be best to have that checked because they could abcess and lead to infections. a routine tooth scaling about once a yr is reccommended for dogs. if you brush regularly after that, you should see good results. remember to brush every day. think about your own mouth if you don't brush evry day. YUCK
yes it's expensive, but better than mor medical bills down the road

i believe u may well be experiencing domestic dog breath which in many circumstances is going away at approximately 3 4 months previous. if u think of its greater effective than that there r various various issues u can attempt. make valuable the domestic dog is on a good form of dogs nutrition like nutro or authority, you may attempt greenies which help sparkling the tooth and freshen the breath, you need to purchase doggie toothpaste in flavors which includes fowl, in addition they make a breath spray for dogs and u can discover any of those products the two @ petsmart or petco.

You should deffinetly go to a pet store or talk to your vet. There are some milkbone treats that help but.....since you sead she will only touch rawhide sticks, guess that wouldn't work. What you could do, to make her body smell good at least, is to get some rose tea pettals, boil them in water, and let it cool and then put it in a spray bottle and spray in on her. NOT TO MUCH!!!!! The smell that you like, your dogs hate. So don't overwhelm her. I hope I could help.

Schedula an appointment tomorrow for a professional teeth cleaning by you vet. Call around for the best deal. Sometimes they have specials for teeth cleaning. My dog was the same way. They had to pull 5 of his teeth. Poor little guy was probably in extreme pain and I didnt even know.!!

Get a babies toothbrush at a store and use that. Or u can get doggie breath mints at a pet store. or u can jsut use regular human mints like those round mint ones that look like candy canes. But make sure it doesn't have artificial sugar in it because i heard on the news it causes seizures in dogs.
HOPE THIS HELPS!

I too would recommend the vet and they also may be able to prescribe a special food.
