My puppy is 4 months old and he has scratched both of his eyes. We have taken him to the vet who gave him antibiotics but we need to do something about his pain. Also, I am concerned that he may have a temporary case of entropion as his eyes are closed so tightly due to the pain. I can get him to open his eyes for a short time but not very long. Any suggestions or advice would be helpful...I am so worried about him. Has anyone else had this problem?

Oh poor baby, that's so sad. I would recommend a warm wet cloth a few times a day on his eyes. Gently wipe and pat his eyes with the cloth, a white cloth is best so dye won't run from the cloth into his eyes. This won't harm him, it will help to relieve the pain and will also take the swelling in his eyes down too. If in doubt tho with any answers you have, I would say to consult your veterinarian since he already has treated your pup. Good luck, I really hope he feels better soon.

For one things I would take my dog to a different vet right away. I am not sure why she gave your dog antibiotics for a scratch eye. Unless the eyes aren't' scratch but have an affection in them. She should have given your dog eye cream to put in his eyes. Plus she would have given you pain med to relieve some of the dog pain. I think maybe you missed understood what is wrong here. Another thing if both eyes of the dog were scartch I would want to find out why. Something isn't really right here.

She would have told you if the puppy had Entropion. that is a condition where the eyelids fold inward..she would have spotted that and that the treatment is simple with surgery in which the excess skin of the outerlids is removed. And this can be done before the cornea is damaged.

If you havent already, get medical advice- what if the eyes are infected?

I hope I am not being really stupid here and being wowed at something which could be quite common but I love puppies and cant go to bed without replying to you!

animal hospital such as the pdsa, blue cross in london or battersea (no I dont think you want to get rid of your pup!)they will help your dog for free if you are on state benefits or a lower income, thier address can be found in the yellow pages or yell.com

if you do have the money for a vet then just look up yellow pages and find a vet- they should be working on call in some areas and will be able to help.

I am elling you to go to get help because think how things would be if your son/daughter/girl/boyfriend scratched their eyes and couldnt open them without pain? you'd be straight down to a&e!!

About two months ago, my puppy had a similar problem with one of her eyes...it was constantly bothering her. She ended up damaging the cornea...from something either getting poked in her eye like a stick or scratched. We are not exactly sure how it happened. The vet gave me eye drops and an ointment to put on her to relieve the pain. Within two weeks, it healed very well. She also had to wear one of those plastic cone things around her head. I would go to the vet again.

I'm a bit surprised that the vet didn't prescribe something for the pain, go back today and ask for something. It may be aspirin but don't be tempted to prescribe it yourself, the dosage is different.
As long as his eyes aren't weepy, and theres no crust in the corners of his eyes (like dried pus) then the antibiotics are doing their job.
He's obviously in a lot of discomfort, thats why he's keeping his eyes shut.

For God's sake don't put anything in his eyes (unless it is the eye moisturising drops as suggested.) Particularly do not use acetone or peroxide as a malicious person has suggested. This would be excrutiatingly painful and would probably blind him permanently.

You can give a dog aspirin in the short term but it really isn't very good for them, I should take him back to the vet for some pain relief. In the meantime try to keep all the blinds drawn and perhaps swap your light bulbs for a lower wattage to make him more comfortable.

Don't you think it would be wise to take the pup back to the vet and get some pain meds and make sure there is no infection even though he is taking antibiotics?? I bet if it were you eyes you would find a way to get to your doctor!

Never had this problem but I would take your puppy to an emergency clinic,,,,,,and let them check him out. I would also find a new vet to where they seem caring and loving and dont request your puppy has to go thru any pain. THAT they are letting him endure.. Stupid to let your pet endure this kind of pain for no reason,,,,,,THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE NEAR YOU THAT WILL HELP,,,,,,,FIND THEM IMMEDIATELY!!
