There has been some debate as to whether this is true or not but the theory is this:

Liquor generally enters the bloodstream more quickly and at higher levels then beer. You body is constantly breaking down the alcohol in your system. All alcolol takes a certain amount of time to reach peak levels in the bloodstream (up to two hours!). The "sicker" is generally related to how drunk you get because as we all know, higher the levels of alcohol the night before the crappier the next morning is.

Therefore, if you drink beer before liquor the beer will be reaching it's highest concentrations when the liquor kicks in and you will be twice as sick. Conversly, if you drink liquor before beer, the liquor will already be partially broken down by your body by the time the beer kicks in and it's less of a shock to the system.

Of course, everyone absorbs alcohol differently and there are many other factors at play such as if you are drinking on a full stomach or not, etc. This is why this seems to apply to some people and not to others.

It isn't true Nathan, it may have something to with the saying -"never mix grape and grain" Drinks made from grape, champagne, brandy, wine etcetera and drinks made from grain, beer, vodka and such have a reaction(adversely) in your stomach. That mixed with gastric juices and acids poisons you to a certain degree and thus; you puke. Either way( i don't know the exact science stuff) mixing ones drinks is not a good idea and drinking to much is bound to make one sick. That's even before the hangover kicks in!

I heard it another way.
Whiskey on beer brings good cheer - but beer on whiskey is mighty risky.
