Yes, they scratch at the door. They are so eager to get outside.

I must have the freak cat of the year here.
He looks at the door and meows until someone comes to let him out.
When he's ready to come in, he leaps at the outside doorknob, and hits the doorbell next to the knob.
He has us trained pretty well.
Count your blessings that your cat's only scratching the carpet.

OMG!!! Yessssssssss. Drives me nuts. Especially when the weather warms a bit and the door can be opened for fresh air. You might try putting a peice of carpet at the door, like a car floor mat, to give it something to scratch at. Not much help, otherwise. I guess it's a cat thang.

My kitten scratches at the door all the time, on the door itself, only he barely uses his claws. All the answers you've gotten before apply: the urge to sharpen their claws, curiosity, wanting out, etc. It just depends on the cat...and if it's an apartment, you never know if there's some strange scent that your cat detects and is trying to get rid of.
There's a spray you can get called "bitter apple" that is unpalatable to animals - they like neither the taste nor scent, so that may help.
Be happy you don't have a cat like one that I fostered - she knew how to jump up and open doors (both round knobs and lever handles), and right before I found a home for her she had the deadbolt lock figured out, just not enough weight to turn it.

Mine used to only if I closed the bathroom or bedroom door. She insists on knowing what's going on in every room at all times, lol. It's kind of funny when I have company over and somebody goes to use the bathroom. I have a small scratch pad hanging from the outside of the bathroom door, so Hobbes grabs that and bangs it against the door like a battering ram. It usually freaks out my guests!

Mine does the bathroom door. To me I think it is a protective thing always wants to know were you are. With the carpet thing if he does have claws and you do not want to dewclaw them (It ruin ens there mental state) there is a GREAT product it is called soft claws and they are wonderful. The cheapest spot I found them is eBay. Then I take my cat to the vet and they put them on the correct way

He is like many other cats. Cats naturally always need to scratch something to keep their claws healthy. Most cats prefer wood and/or carpeting.

My cat, and my son's cat each do this--from inside and outside the door. They let us know when they want to go in and out. My son's cat is quite large, and actually tries to turn the doorknob himself LOL
