I think my dog is half sharpei and I've heard horror stories about sharpei's. Does anyone have any good websites about sharpei's?

Sharpeis are not necessarily mean, they were bred for protection but a well bred, well socialized, purebred Sharpei, should be calm, well mannered, alert, but aloof! Also, you have absolutely no indication of what other breed, your dog is mixed with & what kind of temperament might come from that parent's bloodline, so don't put too much blame on the Sharpei!

I don't know any websites, but I have lived on a farm and been around animals and many breeds of dogs my whole life and sharpei's are the only breed I have ever had problems with. I have had trouble with 1 german shepherd which isn't bad out of 5. It could have just been the 3 that I was around, but they were all from different parents, and while 2 were with one owner, the other was from a completely different owner and place (and was a puppy! - he attacked my dog for no reason!!!!). I am sure they can be trained to be the dog you want if you start training it as a pup. Good Luck to you!@

Don't judge your dog by the breed. All dogs are unique no matter where they come from. Yes, they may have a backround, and you may possibly see that in the dog, but every dog is special and different in their own way. If your dog starts misbehaving, it probably has nothing to do with the breed at all. The breed of the dog though may lead to problems. The show The Dog Whisperer, on the Discovery Channel with Cecer Millan is excellent. You should take some time and watch it.

Trained properly, sharpeis can be ferocious little biters and really nasty in a fight. Usually regarded as cuddly and nice, sharpei's have a mean streak second only to pit bulls'. When that talent's been nurtured and its jaws have locked onto an ankle, there's nothing that can coax the creature to let go -- short of lighting it on fire -- until its victim has either bled to death or offered it a cookie. Extreme caution is advised.

Are Shar Pei Dogs Mean

they can be difficult to train. they are dominant and can be stubborn. not stupid!!! just google shar pei and you will get many links. research, research, research. and then if you ge one, research the breeder. just like any other breed, different breeders breed for differnent traits. some temperment, some for physical traits. i've met some great ones, and some not so grea ones. some are just dog agressive, and some just don't seem to like many people. and some are vey sweet. but i know of a trainer or 2 that will tell you, they can be very difficult to get to do very simple commands like sit and stay. just because they are dominant. not that they don't understand what's being taught, but because they are harder to make them submit to you
as a family dog, you have to have your dog submit to you. if you can't accomplish this, then you have a dog that you can't control. that's usually where the horror stories come in

Hi there, i really hate when people say shar-pei are mean , they are vicious and they all have health problems. i have had chinese shar-pei all my life and am also a breeder of the pei! and not one of my dogs or the other pei i know are mean. its like any other breed from poodle to pittbull depends on how its treated, raised, socialized. any dogs have the teeth and potential to be mean!! but not every dog will be.. mine have never even growled at person the most they would do is lick you to death. but that doesnt mean that there arent mean shar-pei out there if they are treated bad or un socialized then yes im sure there are just like any other breed would be as well. they do not have lock-jaw!! and yes at one time they did try the chinese shar-pei in fighting pits but you will also note that the pei did not make it in the ring as they did not like fighting and many many pei died as the result. there are plenty places to search on the web its best to google search what your looking for. so what meakes you think your dog is half shar-pei? sorry i just really hate when people give certain breeds bad names as every breed in this world had the potential to be vicious. i know people who have been badly bitten by poodle, labs, chi's,cocker spaniels, akita etc and i wonder why people dont think they mean...hmmm i work with animals on a daily basis in a shelter and have seen so many dogs nice and mean of every breed. anyways im done my ranting..lol (shar-pei breeder, crested breeder, shelter worker, owner of health food store for pets) I dont not agree with people saying yes to your question as they are not getting the whole picture.

Shar Pei can be extremely aggressive if they have not been properly socialized. They were bred for fighting, and they do have a tendency to be dog aggressive. I would make sure that you socialized the dog like crazy, do multiple obedience classes with it, and have it spayed or neutered.

I have been around may Shar Pei (both purebred and mixes) and they can be really aggressive but it is maily with other dogs.

Legend has it that they used to guard the Great Wall of China.I know they are expensive and require much care. One lady I knew spent so much money grooming her shar-pei.All those rolls and crevices have to be oiled on a regular basis.
