You can take them to a park for a hike and then have a picnic when you've reached the top. It really depends on where you live, but it is definitely worth it. They are old enough to make the hike. When you've reached the top, you can have great scenery as well. This probably just costs gasoline to get there and a minimal cost of the food in the picnic basket!
If that's not your style, you can hold birthday parties at The Jungle and Chuck E. Cheeses. A really fun place to have a birthday party is LaserQuest, but that might be a bit more pricey. However, it will provide them an experience that they are not likely to forget. LaserQuest has a website that you can visit.

If your children likes the outdoors the zoo is never a bad choice. Most times you don't ahve to tell the zoo that its a party, and if you have a certain number of kids there is probably a group dicount rate. Plus there are no extra fees for games and stuff.
If your kids are the more indoor type try a museum. Some exhibits are geared for kids, and most people do chuckie cheese around this time so it would be something different.
A final one is to do a treasure/scavenger hunt at the local park. You can make clues geared towards the children's ages and they love seek and find adventures.

My soon to be 8 year old girl is having her party at the place she learns gymnastics. They take the kids on the equipment for 1.5 hrs then I feed them
10 year old boy. Look into the local pool if they do parties. Mine will go to 3 in 8 days of these. They start on the 80mt waterslide for 15min. then games for 15 min then 15 min on the giant inflatable toy (slides and clibing nets on the water) then a 15 water basketball game. Then they eat. My kids love these and my son is having his there next month

Wow. I'm 13 now but I had my last bday party when I was 9...and so did most of my friends. Maybe it's different where you live. anyway, try a skating park. I had a friend who did that. It was really fun. It was an indoor skating place with ramps and rentable skates and music and a disco ball and food and arcade games. Maybe they have that in your area. Maybe a surfing/beach party...but that might not work if you live in a cold place...hmmmm uhhh I don't know. That's all I can think of.

You can hold a minor birthday party at Chuckie Cheese, McDonald's, the park, in the house, in the yard, or get permission from a building owner, such as a community center.

Bowling alley, roller rink, arcade. It really depends on the time of year and what the kids are interested, last year we had 3 bowling parties and this year we're having 2 roller rink parties and one at a local water park. In the past we've done the firehouse(good for boys esp. if you know a member) local park and our backyard.

Chuck E Cheese is pretty cheap, but if you want to make the best out of it, I suggest bringing your own cake, and making your own personalized gift bags for the kids. Chuck E Cheeses suck. Im having my kids 8th birthday party there and she is really excited.

It really depends where you are. I know some fun places in New York... Also, you should find out if your local YMCA hosts birthday parties. Mine does, and they're really fun.
