Great musical.
Anyway, it's a religious musical that supports evolution. Really! In the lyrics to "Turn back, O Man," the lady sings "Old now is Earth and none may count her days..." which directly flies in the face of young earth creationism, a doctrine claiming to know exactly how old the earth is. Neat, huh?

Disclaimer - before I get blasted for posting a "stupid question - get your facts right" - I KNOW. It's just a joke. And a good song.

Sweety, it's not good to cast spells on people. My advice to you is to go and read The Bible. :)

Night hon.

Good musical. Meet my wife 34 years ago while performing in Godspell. Have since produced and directed the show several times, including a touring company in 2005. All four of my children and all three of my sons and daughter in laws have also been in the show.

In 2005, our lead (Jesus) had to miss a rehearsal during the final week. So my daughter's son, who was 5 at the time, jump on stage and proceeded to do all the lines, songs, and even the soft-shoe dance.

While the majority of the dialogue is taken directly from the scriptures, the lyrics for the songs are not. Most were taken from a hymnal that Schwartz' grandmother owned. "Turn back" is not the only one that has a "so-so" line or two in it.

Saw Godspell live in San Francisco back in the early seventies. I remember enjoying the music and I was a Christian in those days. But I don't recall the bit about the old earth.

However, young Earth believers are relatively rare even among Christians and you are mistaken if you think that people who believe the earth is old must also believe in evolution. The two things don't necessarily go together.

Godspell was a great musical... I was in a starring role in my high school (many years ago). And you have a point... christians have only been doing this "young earth" crap for a few years, it's relatively new (pun intended).

I saw Godspell in 1978 in Chicago. It was at a theater-in-the-round. It was great! Thanks for reminding me of it. What a great play, and the songs really bring back memories.
