My Mom is know deceased, but I barely remember these chocolate cookies that she use to make. They were the kind that she cooked the ingredients on top of the stove and then dropped them on wax paper. When they cooled and hardened you could eat them. I remember I use to call them cow patties. Can anyone tell me what they could be and the recipe for them? Thanks.......

People sometimes call them "Preacher Cookies," don't ask me why. Now they call them No Bake Cookies or you can buy them in convenience stores where they are called "cow patties." Don't know why that would be appealing but they do taste good. A recipe that I have is as follows:
2 Cups Sugar
1/4 cup baking cocoa
pinch of salt
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup milk
3 tablespoons crunchy peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla
3 cups Quick Oats

In a saucepan: mix sugar, cocoa, and salt. Add melted butter and milk. Bring to boil for 1 full minute. Remove from heat. Add peanut butter, vanilla, and oats. Drop by spoonfuls onto wax paper.

Have not tried this recipe yet. Hope it will work for you.

I've acctually made cow patty cookies before or atleast thats what the recipe was called! This is the recipe I used and they turned out really good-hope this helps out!

INGREDIENTS
2 cups white sugar
5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups quick cooking oats
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup milk

DIRECTIONS
Cover baking sheets with wax paper and set aside.
Combine sugar and cocoa in a large saucepan. Stir in milk, butter and peanut butter. Cook and stir over medium heat until butter melts and mixture is combined, about 5-20 minutes. Remove from heat.
Stir in the vanilla, oats and nuts, and mix thoroughly. Take a teaspoon and scoop out a spoonful of the mixture; drop the spoonful onto the waxed paper-covered baking sheet. Repeat with the rest of the mixture. Place in the refrigerator until the cookies are cooled and set. Store the cookies in an airtight container.

Oh yeah, no-bakes!

I guess they kind of look like cow patties, lol, never thought of that.

My mom's recipe here:

1 c sugar
1/4 c butter (oleo works ok but butter tastes better)
1/4 c cocoa (dutched is better)
1/4 c milk (pet milk works ok in a pinch)

Rolling boil for 1 min, stirring constantly.

Add:

1/4 c peanut butter (chunky or smooth, whatever you got)
1/2 c oats
1/2 t vanilla extract

Drop by spoonfuls onto wax paper.

Well, when I was a kid it turned out that I was allergic to peanut butter, so we tried making them without the peanut butter but it never worked, so for a long time I only smelled them cooking :( and didn't get to eat any. Now I have tried them with soy butter, and it worked great.

My husband had never had these before I started making them again, and got really creative one evening, dumped in 1/2 unsweetened flaked coconut instead of the oats. He likes them better that way, but I have to say I like them with plain oats better, whether that's because I have a set way in my head that they're supposed to be or what I don't know.

If you have one of those silicone mats, the solid ones that you can throw in a cookie sheet, it works even better than wax paper, reduces the cooling time for some reason. Found that out by accident when I ran out of wax paper. :)

Anyway, happy cooking & happy eating! :)

We always called them "Forgotten Cookies", made out of egg whites, sugar and chocolate chips. You put them in the oven, turned the oven off and then you could eat them the next day and the chocolate chips would be all gooey in the sugary encasement.

Forgotten Cookies.... hope that helps.
