Because there is evidence of life here. Therefore, there is evidence that life has a non-trivial chance of happening on planets. Also, there is evidence that there are more planets in the universe than grains of sand on Earth.
Now, we only have us as evidence that life happens, so we really don't know the odds of it happening elsewhere. Though, there is also evidence that systems whose complexity builds on itself is not that uncommon. Therefore, it seems very likely that there is life on other planets. Though, we don't know for sure until we find some.
On the other hand, there are no gods. There aren't any ghosts, either. There are UFOs, but that just means something in the air that we have much information about. No UFO has been shown to be alien. There isn't even any reason why there would be gods and such.

personally, I know this is a big universe and I know it's been around a long time and will be around for a long time. it contains a lot of planets. No really, you have no idea of how big the numbers are.
And I know life arose here. So why not somewhere else?
However, I also think that given the timeframe (life on different planets does not have to evolve at the same pace, in the same time, or even by definition lead to intelligence etc.) and distances involved (really, really, really big distances) it is unlikely that encounters will ever happen nor that there will be any kind of meaningful communication.
So life on different planets in some form or the other presents no problem for me as a hypothesis.
I don't believe UFOs are buzzing the earth or any of that.
I don't believe in ghosts, the human soul, and reincarnation.
Christian god as hypothesis is as full of holes as swiss chees.

I can't speak for all Atheist only myself. I think there is life elsewhere because if there isn't "that's a lot of wasted space" as Jodie Foster said In the movie "Contact".I don't believe in ghost because I have never seen any. UFO's could be human made. If you see a flying object and can't identify it then it's a UFO but it does not mean it is from another planet.

No ghosts. Why? No evidence.
No UFOs and no alien abductions. Why? No evidence. (Especially since video cameras came on the market.)
No god. Why? No evidence.
Life on other planets -- it's possible. Think of it this way:
Suppose that life can arise on, say, literally one planet in a million. We know that the universe contains BILLIONS of galaxies with an an almost unimaginable number of stars. If only a tiny fraction of those stars have planets, and if only one in a million of those planets supports life, then that still means that there's a LARGE number of possible living planets.
It's enough to make your head spin just thinking about it.

Atheists don't necessarily believe in life on other planets. Many do, such as myself, believe that given the size of the universe, there is a statistical probability that life exists somewhere else within the universe. Keep in mind that astronomers have counted over 70 trillion stars. And that's probably just a small percentage of what actually exists.

There is life on at least one planet (this one). There are other planets, but none that we can collect information about that are in roughly the same conditions as Earth. It's not unreasonable to suppose that, given a large enough number of planets, that life arose somewhere else as well.
I for one don't believe in ghosts. UFOs, again, are possible, but I'd have to believe that virtually all UFO 'sightings' were misinterpreted.

why do atheist all of a sudden have to be scientists????? Just because i'm an atheist does not mean i also believe that there is life out there on other planets .
anyhow scientist say and i concur that the probability given the vastness of space that there is life out there is not negligible at all. life doesn't have to have two feet and walk upright, it can be microscopic.
i don't believe in ghosts and and by UFO's, do you mean aliens because while i don't believe aliens have visited us, i believe they are out there.
the truth is science is backed up by facts and figures from data going back millions of years, you just believe something some dude wrote a couple thousand years ago and you call me crazy.
here's a question for you, how do you explain the dinosaurs? how do you explain adam and eve populating the earth with only 2 boys? do i hear incest?
BTW YOU CALL ME OUT ON BELIEVING IN GHOSTS BUT YOU BELIEVE IN ANGELS AND SPIRITS, COME ON NOW WHO'S BEING IRRATIONAL?

Wow. I just answered the same question from someone else. lol. Anyway, this is what I said then:
I think there is probably life on other planets. With billions of galaxies (each with their own solar systems and suns) and who knows HOW many trillions of planets out there, I'd find it difficult to believe that we're the ONLY planet with life on it. I don't believe in space ships or little green men. I don't like to call them UFO's or "Aliens" because I don't think of them as some science-fiction or supernatural thing. I just think of it as someone who lives somewhere else that we haven't seen yet.
If you're trying to compare believing in life on other planets to believing in God, they are two totally different things. The belief in life on other planets is not a SUPERNATURAL thing, anymore than life in other countries on Earth being a supernatural thing. "God" is a supernatural thing.

Physical evidence and likely potential are not the same thing... If it can be on this planet, then with as many that exist out there, life is likely to exist in some form or another elsewhere. Actually it's ridiculous to think this planet is the only one.

Who said all athiests believe in life on other planets!!?!?!?!?!?!
Being an athiest has nothing to do with believing about life on other plants.
The bottom line is that a atheist is someone who does NOT believe in god, that is it. Anything else added is just a personal belief of the person. And my friend, it sure seems we are right. There is no proof for god, AT ALL.
