you know when you press *67 and it makes your call private. my mom says that when you are recieving a private call, you can somehow press a number or * then a number and it sends it to the police. does anyone know anything about this?

I believe you're looking for this function:
Customer Originated Trace (*57)
If you receive a threatening or harassing phone call, you can trace the call by dialing *57. You can then follow up with your local law enforcement agency for further action.

As far as Hot Mamma's answer, I cannot find ANYTHING on the web using the * key to remove your number from telemarketers.
This is an urban myth as far as I'm concerned.

However, if you have a "phone butler" from this company, then the star key does generate a "legally correct message" which informs telemarketers to remove your number from their list.

If you recieve a call from a number that you don't recodnize it probably is a telemarketing firm trying to find out when you are there to pick up the phone. later they will call you. When you recieve these calls press the* key over and over very fast. This disconnects you from their system. It also works on private number calls.
