First of all, if you have a dog that is having seizures, you should have him/her checked by a vet immediately. If you are just looking for information, the following sites will provide all the information regarding seizures in dogs.

I do suggest your local vet first. Also if your vet gives the dog Phenobarbital to stop the seizures also ask to be put on Potassium Bromide. Phenobarbital Stops seizures fast but it is harmful to the dogs liver. Potassium Bromide is a safer drug for seizures but it take 24 days to be fully effective in the dogs system. You will need to have test 1 wk after first meds and again at 24 day to verify saturation of Potassium Bromide. Do Not Let Them Keep The Dog On Phenobarbital..... My dog died due to Her Liver being destroyed by this med.....

In most common case's it is caused by Epilepsy. In extreme cases it is caused by brain tumors. I have been breeding and rescuing dogs for many years and have had to deal with these symptoms. Do not give a dog Kayro syrup for seizures unless the dog has been diagnosed with hypoglycemia. Low blood sugar. Kayro syrup poured directly into the mouth goes straight to the blood stream. Kayro syrup will have no effect if the seizures are caused by any other disease or illness. A vet visit with blood work up should help to determine if Epilepsy is the cause.

A seizure occurs when the neurons misfire, during extreme fevers, brain swelling, injuries, illness and disease. I am not sure if dogs have pseudo seizures but who knows.

If you are asking just to know well there you go. If you are asking because your dog may or may not be having seizures then go to the vet. The only way to know the cause of a seizure is to allow a vet to run tests.

Good luck

There can be 3 reasons for seizures:

1. Primary Epileptic Seizures-those without identifiable cause (idiopathic)--Like human Epilepsy
2. Secondary Epileptic Seizures-those with an identifiable abnormality within the head--Like a tumor
3. Reactive Epileptic Seizures-those due to disease or exposure to toxins

My 9 months old puppy died of cluster seizures. I took him to animal hospital and he was put on medication but a week later has a cluster seizure and did not make it. Vet could not tell me why he had seizures except that it was epilepsy which is congenital and there was nothing else they could do about it.
