The U.S. government put its stamp of approval on a deal that requires very few concessions from the government of Kim Jong Il--and puts off the controversial issues for future negotiations.

The deal, brokered by the Chinese government, requires North Korea to shut down its Yongbyon nuclear reactor within 60 days in exchange for 50,000 metric tons of heavy fuel oil. If the plant is then permanently disabled, North Korea will receive an additional 950,000 tons of fuel oil.

But the agreement says nothing about nuclear weapons that North Korea already has--nor does it address the supposed existence of North Korea’s secret program to enrich uranium.

The terms are essentially the same as those the Bush administration once rejected out of hand.

I think the nuke going off about 50 miles from our carrier group that is currently high tailing it away from the area might have had something to do with it. It's not on it's way to Iran, it's leaving ground zero of the next Korean test site.

W. Clinton gave china missile secrets. They used those secrets to shoot a satellite out of the sky as a threat to prompt us into talks.
We don't want to fight china.
And China is a lot closer to N. Korea with more to lose.
China wants something to happen, a starting point if you will.
N. Korea leadership is scared of the U.S. , wrongfully so and is hanging on tooth and nail. However they desperately need help. So they are taking a baby step forward.
Lets hope they don't fall.
Just my take on the big picture

Bush is not backpeddling. You are just a Bush basher.

You are critical of Bush when he acts alone in the military actions in Iraq. And you are critical when we don't take unilateral action on Iran.

You hate him for doing this deal that is FAR superior to the one Clinton did in the 90's that had NO measurements.

Shutting down the reactor and having it verified by UN Inspectors is just not enough for you, huh?

What else would you have done Cochise?

First liberals complained about Bush not talking and now it seems they are concerned because he has movement on the issue. Unlike Clinton the US is not putting up the aid, south Korea is. Besides we would probably end up sending aid anyhow because Europe and Russia do not care and China is already doing allot.
