No. This could be a sign of autism. I would suggest taking your brother in to a speech therapist. My own brother didn't talk for a while, but his pediatrician reccomended him to a speech therapist who would come over every weekend and play with my brother. He went into this, not saying a word, but came out of it, and you can't get him to stop talking!

A child not talking by five years old should defintely be a cause for concern. Nothing may be seriously wrong with him but his muteness should be checked out by a doctor and then probably a speech-language pathologist. He may be selectively mute although selective mutes do speak in situations where they feel comfortable. If he was autistic he would show other abnormal behaviors such as a tendency to engage in repetitive actions (like rubbing your hand on something soft over and over again) and trouble socializing in general.

No, sorry to tell you but it sounds like he's a little bit behind the chart, usually kids start talking between 18 mo. and 3 yrs old, and everyone develops at it's own rhythm but in a time frame, and he's kind of falling behind, I would take him to the pediatrician and ask him, It doesn't seem to be a hearing problem, since he's humming tunes, but I would definitely recommend a check up.

Your mother should take him to be seen by his pediatrician. My 5y/o son talks almost constantly and he speaks very clearly. It could anything from a hearing disorder to autism. It would be best to have him looked at. Good for you for being so concerned about your little brother. I hope that things turn out ok for him. Good luck!

It's been said that at 5 years old, and had not yet said anything, Niels Bohr had burned himself. The maid bandaged the burn and asked him how it felt. He's claimed to have replied, "Your professional application of the bandage has abated the pain, Ma'am."

No i would make sure that he went to a pediatrician. Does he have a hearing problem? That could be related also to him not talking.
