The threee year old cat (male) and the puppy (female) mostly play. It can be irritating, but the behavior is correctable and I'm working on keeping them in line. However the old cat is scary and the puppy is markedly more aggresive with her. Also the younger cat is aggresive with her and will chase her through the house or they fight, which gets the dog all riled up. Even when the dog is caged the cats fight for position on the bed, sometimes in the middle of the night. This has become more prevalent as the older cat has become more and more frail. She is also exhibiting undesirable behaviors she would never have done when younger. The vet said cats can actually become sort of senile and outside of being moody, frail and senile, she's in farily good health for her age. To keep the peace and my sanity, should I put the old cat down or find the puppy a new home?

Ok, in human years the older cat is llike, 80. And it has two kids messing around, how the hell would you feel?! Imagine that she probobly has arthritis and the aggressions of the younger animals probobly cause her a great deal of pain or discomfort. She is just trying to keep herself safe. Um, you either need to get a spray bottle to teach the younger pets that the old lady is off limits. Or consider seperating them in the house. That is all i can say.

Well, having more than one pet can cause fighting amongst the pets. If I were in your shoes, I would get rid of the 16 year old cat. The three year old cat and the 8 month Bichon get along great, and I would think it would be cute to see them play together. It will make life that much easier for you since you won't have to be wasting your time getting scratched trying to stop a fight between your pets. The 16 year old cat will, sadly to say, soon be no longer living so don't you think it would be better for your feelings to know that the pet didn't die, and to know that the pet won't have to deal with the other pets of yours. Besides, does an old cat really have the energy and health to run around being chased by your other pets all day? Do what you think is right, and I'm glad I could help.

I couldn't stand the thought of getting rid of an animal just because he is older. I had an old cat once and brought home a puppy. The cat was OK with the pup, but quickly would get tired and angry with him. I put a baby gate up at the stairs. The cat could jump over the gate to get away from the dog and have some peace. You may want to try something like that for your older cat.

Animals are like humans as they age they change. Why get rid of any of the pets. Your 3 yr old cat and your 8 yr old pup are growing up together. The 16 year old cat is set in her ways and she is OLD.

I own 3 Miniature Schnauzers. The male is 2, his sister is 8 months, and the old lady is 9 years old. Guess who starts all the fights, the old fart. Guess who I am getting rid of, NO ONE. I get MAD at the old lady, but I am NOT getting rid of her.

I knew when I got the young ones the old lady would want them to know where her turf laid, but I still get PO when she out of the blue attacks the 8 month old female. That is right she only goes after the female, but I am not getting rid of any of them until it is time.

That is a hard question to answer. If it was me I would exaust all avenues (keep them seperated etc) if everything else failed well... You have had a cat for 16 yrs that has been part of your life for so long,, and a 3 month old puppy who really should be sharing your life and giving you unconditional love for always.
I can't help you answer this question, its something you have to decide for yourself.

I honestly think your 16 yr old cat is very irriatated with all of this.drama in your home. If I were you I would let the older cat be the superior and in charge,,,the other cat is not alpha,,,,,,,and the dog,,,,let it sleep in your bed with you. These cats have to figure their pecking order...something humans cannot do for them. Best of Luck !!

To quote you:

"To keep the peace and my sanity, should I put the old cat down or find the puppy a new home?"

YOU need to learn to commit to the pet that you take into your home! You DO NOT trade pets like you trade cars! PLEASE tell me that you're not having kids that will "learn" to adopt your "values".

Your "sanity" My ***!
