My husband is partially deaf and needs different glasses for reading and watching movies. Is there any software accessory I can run which will allow me to turn up the speech volume but turn down the incidental music and background noise when we watch films late at night as even if we turn it up loud the background noise interferes and he still can't make it out.
It's really annoying.

I need it to be something eg a player program that I can use real-time, I mean I don't want to have to rip and edit every film- I just want to be able to watch them.

See if your DVD player has an equalizer function and adjust it to emphasis voice frequencies while reduce the volume at upper and lower frequencies.

As a last alternative you can try adjusting the sound on the TV itself. Even rudimentary controls like bass and treble will allow you to emphasis voice frequencies.

The same is also true sometimes when watching dvd's on the tv. If you turn up the volume to hear the speech channel, you turn up the other channels as well. Does your husband have surround sound on his pc? If he does, you might be able to monkey around with the center channel speakers, maybe get one with it's own volume control. If you discover a solution, I would bet a lot of people would like to know it.

Why don't you just turn on the subtitles which is like closed captioning this way the sound volume won't be a problem.
