Hello,

I have Vista Ultimate and I think it is better than XP....considering vista is new and xp is five years old. It has nice features for ultimate and premium. Unless you are willing to spend 260 or 170, and a lot of time, don't worry about it unless you are like me and have to be the most up to date. If you aren't "crazy" with this stuff...just wait until you buy a new pc with vista preloaded. You ahve to do it sometime:)

Hope that helps!

Yes, I am but whether you are happy with it or not will depend on a few things. Vista likes memory (it uses memory to preload commonly used applications, THIS IS NOT startup items). While it will work with 1GB, it is HIGHLY recommended to have 1.5GB to 4GB with the emphasis on more is better.

It also likes dual core processors (Core Duo, Core 2 Duo or Athlon 64x2 are best) but it will run on single cores but it may not be as speedy and speeds of at least 1.6GHz are not optional.

As far as hard drive space, I'd say 80GB at a minimum but if you do gaming or video editing, MUCH MORE in the area of 250GB or more.

Graphics... well if you want to take advantage of Aero Glass you will need a dedicated graphics card and while it will run on low end cards, it won't be happy so for that you will want something in the Geforce 6600, 7600, 78/7900, 8800 series or ATi Radeons in the 9800 or X1K series (the X1650XT is an excellent choice for Vista). If you want to take advantage of DirectX 10 you will need to get the 8800 series from nvidia or wait for the X2600/X2800 series from ATi.

Also, you will have to know a little bit about your hardware should Vista not have the driver. It is possible to (in some cases) force an XP driver to work under Vista. But if you aren't that PC literate then you shouldn't mess around with Vista.

It depends on your level of knowledge, if you have built a PC from scratch, know about msconfig and setting prefetch parameters then go for Vista. If not, you should probably wait for the next refresh of Vista (in the form of Vista SP1 due later this year).

And yes, I do like Vista but keep in mind the hardware requirements and not all the drivers will be there (in some cases).

I'm not one to jump to a new platform right away but I did install it just to check out that the iso I downloaded was ok and that the activation workaround did it's job. I set it up as a secondary boot option but it's actually not bad at all. Most of the software I run is fairly bug free. (adobe cs2suite, office 07, dc++....couple games got buggy on me but it really comes down to the specific vendor and how up to date they are).

Not real crazy about the extra graphics...kinda just a lotta fluff. The translucent title bars remind me of running ghost it which i was never a big fan of.

On average, I boot to vista once or twice a week and leave it on until I run into a problem. Haven't been able to get either my moto razr or my cannon camera connected yet but I imagine drivers will start showing up. For the time being, it's a good idea to leave xp there and just install to a 2nd hardisk or partition.

Oh, and the new poker game is way better than solitaire anyday ;)
