i own a repair shop, and they are really good vehicles to own ,the gas mileage on them is pretty good considering that they are 4 wheel drive, and all but they hold up really well, that's what counts, and when they do tear up,your not looking at paying high prices for parts, because there's plenty of them around, and will be for a long time,if you get one that has been taken care of it wont nickel and dime you to death,we all try to avoid this when buying a vehicle, but over all there really good vehicles,i own a 98 model and i average around 25 mpg on it,so i don't think that's too bad,and i usually drive it pretty hard also, but i have the 4.0 in line 6 in it,and it does really good, but this should give you a good idea of what to expect from one, good luck,i hope this help,s.

Hey As An Owner Of Alot of Cherokees (Different Vintages)The Biggest Problem (I've Encountered) with the 93-96 models Is Rust, The Floor Rots Out And the roof line Just Above the Windsheild And Doors. However I Live In Canada With lots of salt on the roads. So If your In a southern Warmer Climate (Less snow and Salt)And That is where the Jeep Is From you should be ok for RUST, If Its Over 130 000 Miles Check the Air Cleaner For Blow By(Oily residue On the filter or in bottom of Filter box).
If thats Good And Your CarFax Report is Good they can go for a long time With proper Maintenance (I've Seen Plenty And Owned a couple Over 350 000 Miles) Only reg little problems Brakes ,Tune up,Tires

I own a 96 Grand Cherokee, with the 4.0L inline 6 cylinder engine and I average around 26-28MPG mixed city/highway. This mileage may vary due to the way you drive, 4WD usage, etc. But Jeeps are very reliable, I currently have 192,000 miles on mine, the only 2 things that aren't original is the radiator and starter, both replaced about 6,000 miles ago. Other than that just normal maintenance is about it (i.e. oil changes, tuneups) if there is a problem that developes get it fixed immediately to keep from having any further problems.
Even if you don't plan on offroading, still get a 4WD model. The 4WD is always a great feature to have whether you use it much or not, it also helps with resell value. 2WD jeeps are just pointless.

As the former owner of several Jeeps , I can say that the 4.0 six cylinder is a great engine, but they do leak oil/fluids whether they're three years old or twenty-three. They didn't come with very good seals, As for fuel milage, you'll get 15-16 mpg in town and up to 22 on the open highway. Honestly, I'd get a mechanic to look it over before buying, cause I had one that cost me $3500 in repairs before I got smart and sold it. If off-road is a no, then I'd just get a CR-V or a RAV-4, and get about 5-6 more miles per gallon

I have a 1992 jeep cherokee laredo and it has 186,000 miles on I bought like 5 years ago for a winter beater and I have to say it is an amazing suv..!! aside from the steering stabalizer bar the only thing in the 5 years done to it was stuff like brakes and oil...the gas mileage well not that great but far from bad...I say great for a buy but others may say different, mine has been more than I could ask for and is still going great..any other questions feel free to ask.. :)

I drive the same model every day- 95 sport with a 4.0 HO engine and auto transmission. Mine has just turned over 230,000 miles, runs great, and I have had to replace very little. HAd some heavy gauge rocker panels custom made for it when the original rusted through and recently replaced the alternator. I have a few minor electrical probelms from time to time and now need to replace the front upper ball joints. I paid $1,500 u.s. for it two years ago. The previous owner ( a neighbor and sole owner) replaced the exhaust with one that allows for higher flow as well as installed a K&N air filter system. Since the previous owner had taken to using full synthetic lubricants in it I still do. I use MObil ONE full synthetic motor oil, B&M TrickShift full synthetic transmission fluid, and MObil One gear oil. It gets about 27mpg highway- but could use a fresh tuneup. We have had harsh winter weather for two weeks here and it has not failed with the 4 WD system.
Overall they are simple to repair in most cases, run very well and for many hundreds of thousands of miles.

I have a 2001 and a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lardeo. I love them both! my 01 has 250,000 miles on it. and still runs like new. never have had a problem with it. and it has a V8 in it. depending on how hard u r on the accelerator u should expect about 17 to 20 mpg. which isn't too bad for a V6 suv. i get about 15-19 mpg with the V8 and my 03 has barely 23,000 nothing wrong so far.... and its a V6 and i get about 20 to 22 mpg in it.
They are really good vehicles. treat them nice. and they will treat you nice :D

I have a 2001 cherokee sport and I have not had any major problems. I really like mine. The gas mileage is not that great but I like the 4 wheel drive.

Avoid SUVs that have a live axle with leaf spring suspension. This type of suspension allows the wheels to deflect laterally during cornering. The result is that the vehicle has a tendency to roll over in swerve-and-correct maneuvers.

It really kind of depends on what the carfax report says. But $4,000 is the average price in my neck of the woods.
