I would say Shanghai is the best place to shop for inexpensive goods with the name brands. They might not be real, but they look more than real. There is a street name Huating Rd. ALL the products they sell on that street have name brands (not real, of course). People from different countries go there buy them in bulks, and bring them back to resell. If you are not into the name brands, there are many other local privately owned stores which sell variety of goods. Not to mention the foods over there are excellent, and inexpensive!

I've shopped in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong...it's definitely NOT HK. The prices there are at least as high, if not higher, than comparable items in the States.

Both Beijing and Shanghai have tourist traveled shopping areas in the center of each city. The prices there are OK, but not great. You can get 10-20% discounts on comparable items in the States. Shopping is easy in the bigger outlets because the clerks generally speak English and the items are marked in English. Shopping is more problematic when trying to barter in the small mom and pop stores that line the streets.
