I rescued a young adult male Jack Russell from a local dog pound last week. He is a very well-trained and loving little guy. However, he has yet to bark even once. He has whined and whimpered a few times, yet not one bark. People I know who have experience with the breed say they can be naturally quite "yappy." Can his lack of barking be natural, or is it possible that his previous owner had him surgically altered to prevent barking?

Although it's possible he was surgically altered to prevent barking, I don't think that's the case.
I have a beagle who I rescued from a pound a few years ago. He didn't bark for the first 2-3 weeks, now he won't shutup! :P
He's probably just getting adjusted to the new environment, it's only been a week so give him time.
Good luck on your new addition to the family :]

Hi,

I would think he is probably just getting adjusted to your house. If he is very well trained, he may be less of a barker which is a good thing. I have an 11 month old jack russell and since she was socialized a lot since I got her she won't bark at people outside like garbage men/landscapers or at other dogs walking by. Certain things like cats/squirrels do make her crazy though. She will also bark at random things in the house like people blow drying their hair, dusting, mopping...just about every household chore but she is getting a lot better. I would just give your dog some time i doubt he would have had surgery. Good luck and have fun with your new dog...they are such a fun breed!!
