I'm looking to go to visit my family back home and looking to buy tickets that are really cheap. Home is Northern GA but you have to fly into either Chattanooga, TN or Atlanta, GA they run about the same price and are about the same distance from my parents house. Can anyone out there help me and let me know where to find cheap tickets or tell me how to do the free ticket thing at the airport?

Somebody told us that somehow you can get on a plane for free, How do you do that?

I've never heard about getting on an flight for free. But check out Delta's site. I find buying tickets directly from the airline itself is cheaper than going to another website. You dont pay for all the hidden fees. Delta usually has some pretty good deals, plus they're based in Atlanta. Check their site often as the prices can change frequently.

Ok, well considering how vague you have been, I am not sure how much I can help. To tell you how to fly cheap, first you have to know where you are coming FROM. A lot of airlines do not cover all cities. There are a couple ways to do it cheap.

First of all, to do it cheap you cannot be picky about when you fly out and go back. You will not fly out Friday and back Sunday and do it cheap. That is because these are prime flying days, and airlines know it. Fly during the week if price is the concern.

Second, airline tickets are usually cheapest on a Tuesday to PURCHASE. I was told this by a friend who's girlfriend works for the airlines, and it works. He told me to wait one day (I was buying a ticket on a Monday and it was somewhat expensive) which I did. I ended up saving about $80 (round trip) on the exact same flights by buying on Tuesday. They re-evaluate their ticket sales and fares on Mondays for the previous week/weekend, and the fares go into effect on Tuesday. So if you find a really good rate on Monday, buy then as well because it could go up the next day. Usually it will go down on Tuesday about 2-3 weeks in advance.

To get a cheap ticket, you almost always have to buy it 2-4 weeks in advance. Any less than 2 weeks is desperation time. The airlines know that if you booking short notice, you will probably pay almost anything and they price accordingly. More than 4 weeks in advance and the airlines are not sure how it is going to book so the price is a little higher. The 2-4 week range is when the airline is just doing what they can to fill all the seats.

Become a "frequent flier" with one of the airlines. When you sign up for that, you start getting notices about sale fares and weekend rates. It is very hit or miss, but sometimes you get lucky. This is especially good if you are flexible and know you want to go and don't care when.

Either book through a discount broker (I like expedia.com) or direct through the airline. Normal ticket brokers and travel agents will just tack a fee onto the normal ticket price. With the internet nowadays, there is no reason to pay an agent to do what you can do yourself. I have been having more luck recently with direct to the airlines. The airlines have been realizing they are getting undercut from discount brokers and pricing accordingly.

If you are under 23 you can fly standby on Airtran for about $30 each way. There is no way to fly for free unless you have connections with an airline (friend, family member, etc.). And if you had these connections, you probably would not be asking. Airtran has their X-fares for $30 each way. This is a program they use to help young people travel, and fill their otherwise empty seats. The problem, you fly standby. There is no guarantee you get on a particular flight at a particular time. There is also the issue of if Airtran flies where you are going. You also cannot check a bag. And you have to be young enough. But you can fly for dirt cheap if all the above is ok. From there you are on your own, I have given you the gems I have learned over the years from traveling. Good luck.
