Before I address your direct question, it's worth noting that your question conflates different forms of environmental impact. Although recycling substantially reduces environmental impact, I've never seen anything to indicate that it has any direct connection with global warming.

As I've heard it, the chief phenomena influencing global temperatures are things along the lines of surface albedo and atmospheric composition. The human activities which I've heard cited as being the biggest factors in climate change are power generation and transporation, primarily from the burning of petroleum and coal. Although activities like paper recycling do reduce our need for timber, I don't think there's much contribution there, at least not directly. I think the chief benefits of recycling are the ability to reduce our impact on the biosphere through activities like deforestation and mining more than atmospheric impact.

That said, there is an increasing interest in recycling, at least in the United States. The link below is to a recent NPR show on the subject.

As for your direct question, continuing to talk about it and otherwise raise awareness is a good start. You might also find volunteer opportunities in your area to find folks who are similarly motivated.

"Be the change you want to see in the world." - Gandhi

However, a few of the other posters are correct. A portion of the world is selfish and sees no reason to change unless faced with a tragic event. Forcing people to follow your will through violence of military power is pointless, it has been and always will be a temporary solution.

Scrap metal was recycled in earnest during WW II due to a lack of processed metals to create - ironically - war machines.

The only real way to make anyone do anything in our current global society is money. Either fine those who do not act or reward those who do act. Example: Fine for littering and cash for recycling.

I'm not sure about that but I can tell you a reason why people don't recycle. It's because it isn't available. The best way to get people to cooperate is if what you're asking is easy and fast for them to do. Maybe providing more recycling bins in locations.

Yeah good idea, maybe by next week everyone on the planet will start recycling, stop smoking, stop clear cutting forest land, scrap their SUVs and drive hybrids, and put a stop to all pollution causing industry, and live together in peace, harmony, and equality. All you need to do is raise an army, take over the world, and execute anyone who doesn't comply. If you need any help, just let me know.

you would have to figure out a way to eliminate every single person's ablitly to make a choice, because that's really what it boils down to. Some people choose to recyle some people choose not to. The abilty to make decisions is one of the things that makes us human, so in short: you cannot get everyone in the world to recycle. Oh yeah, and global warming is a bunch of BS anyways.
