My little boy turns 1 next month too. Im having an afternoon tea get together in a park. Hopefully the weather will be kind. Whatever you do I'm sure it will be great.

Invite your family and close friends. Have some easy food to make (hot dogs/hamburgers/chips). Talk and eat (and watch the little one run around while telling stories about him). Do the cake thing... see if your grocerie store will give you a discount on a "smash cake" if you buy a sheet cake (tell them it's for a first birthday). Let him go at it in the cake, then "hose 'im down"! :-) Opening presents is what takes the longest!

My daughter turns one next monthalso. If the weather's nice I'm going to have it outside with just the close family with cake and ice cream. Have him take a nap before the party so he doesn't go to sleep during the party. Have fun.

Have a family get together. Maybe invite 1 other one year old.
When my friends little one turnt one she had a family/close friends get together at her house. We had pasta and sauce, salad, garlic bread. Cake, ice cream. the kids just played and everyone brought presents. It wasn't something she remembered but all the adults had fun.

i'm going to watch along here since we're expecting our first baby in 2 months. maybe i'll pick up some good ideas. but i'd venture a few guesses: the birthday party may be 'for' the little man, but in reality it's 'for' the grownups who will get to practice for the birthdays in a few years when junior will be able to appreciate them better. keeping that in mind....
something with pictures that you will be able to share with those who can't be there (their loss). junior in a high chair with a birthday bib, and something safe like a pudding 'cake' with a candle that isn't lit... shaped like his favorite toy? plenty of visiting time with the guests but also some quiet time, he will be tired from all the hustle and bustle. some soothing music playing in the background after "happy birthday' is over? a rousing game of pass the baby where everyone gets to hold him for awhile presents many photo ops, and gives mom's arms a rest.
just a warning about 'special' treats... my mom and dad tell the story about me eating a whole jar of bananas on father's day when i was one month old. then crying the whole rest of the day. happy father's day, dad!
enjoy your celebration... BOTH of you! we can't wait for our chance soon, thanks for the nice mental pictures.

A birthday party for a one year old is like a wedding. They are both for the enjoyment of the bride/mother. In both cases it she who benefits.

Just invite family, that would be my advice. You will be more excited then they are and it makes it alot less hectic. Have fun!
