they are a sign of your personal danger, and i do mean that:
blackouts happen when you drink so much liquor that you have toxified your cells to the point that the nerve cells in your brain are not firing properly because the chemicals in your brain have been altered by the booze. that interferes with the electrical current that transmits neurotransmitters from one nerve cell (brain cell) to the other, over a separation that is called a synapse.
when you mess with the chemistry in your brain too much, especially with alcohol, an anesthetic (dulls your senses), it sort of shuts down. you get so toxified that you cannot remember what you were doing at the time of the blackout.
if you are starting to get blackouts, go to AA. face your problem. else, see if you can stop drinking without wanting to drink. if you want to drink, then go to AA. go every single day. the sooner you face your problem, the further you get from losing your spouse, your children, your home, your job, your car, your money, and maybe even your liberty: if you commit a crime in a blackout, for example the common one of killing another driver while you are driving around drunk, you may even be put into jail.

I think it's when people "lose time" they end up places and they don't know how they got their because they've blacked out, and have no memory of that time. Or it is also a term for fainting.
