It could be rust. You should wipe all your guns down and keep them in a special gun sock that has silica in it and prevents rust and also use Breakfree spray. I have an old 70's Police S&W Model 10 and it has no problems with rust, because I keep it pretty well oiled. You need to take good care of your guns.

With your current problem, I would contact S&W and see if maybe that year & model is known to have the problems you are having. They might fix it or even replace it. S&W takes good care of their owners, so give it a try. Airweights are good guns and this doesn't sound normal at all. Call S&W at:

If the nickel is peeling, the guns frame was not properly preped before it was applied. I'd do as the man above suggests and contact S&W. They will likely fix you up either for free, or at much less money than a gunsmith would charge to send it away for a re-nickel job. Smith and Wesson is a good, solid American Company, who want you to be pleased with their product.
