I recently got a 4 month old dog. He seems so sad and seems very Happy when he sees other dogs. I try to cuddle him, Love him and play but he looks at me so sadly and just doesnt seem interested and playful, but gets playful when he sees other Dogs.
Is it a bad idea to get him a pal? He is going to be a fairly med-large dog, so I was considering getting another but only small in size

yes, it will help him alot to have another dog around.
dogs are pack animals... normally dogs view humans as part of thier pack, but being that yours is so young, it may not identify with you as a member of its pack yet.
depression can be a problem with dogs that dont have other dog contact. I cannot say for sure your dog is depressed, but it sounds like it, he most likely misses his litter mates.

You said you 'recently' got him. How long ago was that? Have you given him time to really accept you as the leader of his pack? My thought is that if you get him a little pal, he'll bond with it instead of bonding with you. And he's only 4 months old. If he was mine, I would keep him as a single until we had the kind of bond all dogs need. Then, maybe consider getting him a pal when he's older.

I had a male Dane for a couple of years before I got my female. After two years together, the male died. Within two weeks, my surviving female, had started losing weight and wouldn't run or play. She was totally disinterested in life and I thought she was going to grieve herself to death. So, I got her a pal to save her life. Since we had had her for more than two years at the time, I knew she had bonded with my husband and me, so there was no problem there. She perked right up after the new guy came. (of course, he was just about the same height as she and maybe 40 pounds heavier, but she could still hold her own with him. She had him rolling in the dirt as much as he did her!)

I would suggest you give him more time to make the adjustment and maybe get a copy of Dog Training for Dummies. It has some really good advice to help with training a puppy to know that you're the leader of his pack.

I would deff. get him another dog. Since hes going to be a med-large dog i would get another the same size. Because the dog u have now may be to rough fo ra small dog. Unless u get a small sporting dog, Cocker Spaniel (had one when i was younger great dogs), A german Rottweiler (most are a smaller version of rottweilers, they look like bigger browner bulldogs, except their face is cuter).... Nothing like a chihuahua or poodle or anyhting like that. I've got a 3 yr. old Choc. Lab, Woodie, and his son a 7 month old choc. lab/german rotti mix, Charlie. And its great having two big dogs becasue they can play and bite each other without seriously hurting each other. Yeah it can be a handfull at times but overall id rather them be able to play with each other and not hold back (its specially good at bedtime because then they go straight to bed) and not me constantly yelling at Woodie to not hurt the other one. Becuase now Charlie is actually outgrowing Woodie so they can be as rough as they want.
Hope this helps.!

yes, you should definitely get your dog a playmate. but first make sure that you can take care of both dogs. the dog should be the same gender or there will be complications. also, get him a pal that is about the same size and age. if you're not sure that you can support another dog, find someone in your neighborhood and ask if their dog needs a playmate to play with once in a while

i would consult a vet before deciding if another dog would be the key to the solution. Sometimes doggy depression runs a bit deeper than just wanting a playmate. Also, it's good to remember that it's not going to just be a playmate for your dog, but it's another member of the family to love and care for.

it might help to get another dog but i would get one that will be around the same size as him because if you get one smaller and for some reason they fight about something which all dogs do the smaller one can really get hurt. i know because i have raised a lot of dogs over the years. hope this helps.

Yes! I used to have 2 dogs, but, a few days ago, one of them ran away , and pretty soon after that my other dog died. I think it was because my dog missed the other one too much, or else it is just plain unlucky

Make sure with your vet that first he isn't sick. Since he is a puppy he probably still remembers and misses his mother and littermates. Different dogs have different personalities. I had a dauschund and he didn't like other dogs but loved human companionship. You dog might be different. All dogs have different persomalities.

Lethargy is many times a demonstration of ailment. at the same time as replaced into the perfect time you talked about your canines poop? even extra significant, at the same time as replaced into the perfect time you talked about your canines drink water? at the same time as did he very last visit the vet? His lethargy and absence of interest in nutrition type of factors in the route of an intestinal blockage, yet there might want to be no thanks to entice close until eventually he had an exam.
