I always treated my day like those on the 9-5 grind. I'd get up, eat breakfast, get showered and dressed and go to work. At work I'd eat my lunch. When I got home, I would stay up for a while, about four or five hours, eating my dinner sometime in there, then go to bed and repeat the next day.

Actually, since they work all night the hours they keep are switched from what we view as normal. 7:00 o'clock is their 5:00 P.M.
Having worked 12 hour night shifts for years before I got tired of it, when we got off work we normally went to a bar that sold food and ordered everything from burgers, steaks, breakfast, sandwiches, whatever they had to offer. And since we had been drinking coffee all night at work; it was normal for us to order beer since it was our "evening-time".

they use an IV feeding tube that is set up beside their beds, the tube normally goes in just after the night shift worker arrives home and slips into bed. later about 4pm when night shift work wakes, he/she takes out the IV, and resumes normal solid foods

I have not got any concern eating a huge meal previously drowsing, I do it, and wild animals do it too, it feels organic to me, I recommend digesting nutrition takes a lot of power and engaged on a similar time as digesting, is power overload, on a similar time as digesting on a similar time as resting is wise to me.

Having been there and done that, I'd recommend eating a light meal before you go to bed. When you wake up have your main meal and before you go to work, have your moderate meal.

night shift workers have a tendancy to eat a lot of carbs - breads, donuts, etc and therefore gain weight.

You eat whatever you want. I prefer beer and pizza. Try getting a good pizza at 8 am.
