would like small pieces of solid woods prefer 1inch by 1 in where can I find this? please?

would like to cover existing stair treads and risers with tile like (but hard wood) pieces.

You can try going to your local woodworking shop, and ask then if you can go through there scrap bin, I have folks going through mine all the time.

Home Depot, Lowes, Lumber Yard--all those stores sell wood and will cut it to your specifications.
