In Japan, most people never say "Aishiteru" because it is too straight forward and kind of embarrassing to say. Usually, they use "Dai suki te yo" (when coming from a girl to a guy) which literally means, I like you very much, but it used mostly as a substitute for "I love you."

Written in hiragana (syllables) it is:
Aishiteru (I love you):
あいしてる
Daisukiteyo (I like you a lot):
だいすきてよ

Written in kanji (common japanese) it is:
Aishiteru:
愛 してる
Daisukiteyo:
大好きてよ

Also, there is no straight way to say "I miss you" either. (Aren't the Japanese so aggresive? Sarcasm.) =D You would say either "I'm thinking of you" or "I'm lonely/want to see you." The last one is most likely for people to say, and more close to meaning "I miss you."

Written in hiragana:
Anata no koto wo kangaeteiru. (I'm thinking of you):
あなたのことをかんがえテイル
Samishii desu. (I miss you.):
さみしです

Written in kanji:
Anata no koto wo kangaeteiru:
貴方の事を考えテイル
Samishii desu:
寂しです

Hope I helped. =]
