There is always a catch. They ask you for you e-mail and other information. Then they say you have to sign up for something so you can get the free item that they are advertising. So anyway, you still end up paying for something.

actually, most of those offers ARE real. the way they work is this:

you have to get a certain number of points to get the prize. you get the points by signing up for different offers, like trial memberships, etc. for each offer that you complete, that vendor pays a referral fee to the site offering the free console. the referral fees range in amounts depending on the offers. eventually, your referrals make enough money for the site to buy you a console. here's a simple example:

console costs $400.
each referral brings in $25 to the site.
once you complete 16 referrals, the site has made $400 off you, and can use that money to buy you the console.
usually, the site will require you to complete a number of offers that will make them more than they will spend on the console.

Yeah. there is a catch. You end up bothering 30 friends and emailing them to join this giant pyramid scam. They all have to sign up and buy a sponsor's product, but very rarely do you get anything back in return.
