Or does it make it look longer and thinner while it is cut shorter? Do hairstylist only use thinning scissors all over your head when you get your hair layered? Or do they thin the top only and use the hair clippers on the sides and back?

Getting hair layered makes it look thicker and like it has more body. All stylists layer differently. It'd be hard to say.

Depending on your hairstyle, it could look shorter, simply because in proportion it'd look 'wider' or 'deeper'.

I have layers they are really nice. Layers are a good way to add body to your hair and a bit of face- framing shape to it. In some cases the hair may look shorter from a front veiw, but will remain fairly long looking in the back. I would say yes and no depending on the hair type. You said your hair is medium long, so it just might look a bit shorter, but once it starts to grow it will look longer. I have wavy hair as well, I use a lot of John Frieda products, or Revlon. Depending on your hair texture, I would use a wrap lotion after washing it, it will help your hair stayle stay bouncy, free-flowing and shiny. I would wrap it before I go to sleep at night, it helps it grow healthier. It also makes your layers stand out more beautifly.

Shorter. Unless you have long layers. Sometimes the top layer is very short. But, if you want it to look longer tell the stylist to cut the first layer longer.

It depends. Well Layers can sometimes make your hair look short. Maybe a bit thinner but you can volumeize it easier. Not all of them use razors. Sometimes they just use that for the top part of your head.

if you get layers and you have a long face, it makes your face look wider and more normal. it helps out your facial features and cheekbones. plus, i think it makes it look longer and fuller. you can get your hairstylist to layer it however you want, they use a sharp 'comb' that has sharp razor prongs close together that cut the hair 'comb' it. you dont really comb it with that tool, you slide it down the parts of your hair you want layered.

Its still long but is really short in the end result. It give you volume however. Do long layers. Thats where the shortest piece of hair is an inch below your chin. They can also texturize it to give more lift

Personally, I reckon, it kinda makes your hair look longer! But thats mostly the way Ive seen it done!
But hairdressers can do it so many different ways, anyway you like, it really up to you with all that! Goodluck! =]
