Cough in children is very common. The word continuous could mean a day or 6 months, so I will need to be very general.

Firstly there is a big difference between a one off cough and frequent episodes of cough, and also as I said duration is important.

The vast majority of all coughs in children and also a high percentage in adults are due to viral induced lung irritability, i.e. a simple viral cold causes lung stability to be lost for a period. (this can be very protracted and sometimes almost indefinite.)

If a one of chesty episode lasts for more that 3 weeks it wise to get a chest x-ray to exclude rarities like TB of inhaled foreign bodies. About 95% of these come back normal. This in itself is vastly reassuring to everyone and really excludes anything serious.

A few will show infection, most of these are viral and will not respond to any treatment, a tiny number look bacterial and tend to receive antibiotics, though this may not affect the outcome, and a few turn out to be what is called atypical. These include whooping cough, mycoplasma, chlamydia pneumonia etc. Often these are given antibiotics, again will little evidence that the outcome is changed.

Assuming this is a one off and the x-ray is negative, generally it is a good idea to sit on one's hands for a while. Most of these episodes will settle with time and anyway will be unaffected by any treatment. If they persist indefinitly 4-6 weeks on low dose inhaled steroids may stabilise the lungs.

Without refering specifically to your child or your GP, I believe that sometimes the very best GPs know that if nothing works the best treatment is nothing! Cough medicines are NEVER useful and anthistamines given as allergy relief have little or no effect on cough of any sort.

How old? Someone in their 20's or 30's (perhaps younger I dont' know) could have what is known as acid reflux and coughing is a symptom. When is coughing worse? At night, during day. Need details.

This is a very important and useful report especially for yourself and your precious family. I used to have a serious allergic symptoms but after I switched those household toxic products to safe, non-toxic products all the symptoms (respiraotry allergy, skin problems...) were gone away forever. Taking a reference to this report if you switch your toxic products to safe products not having those toxic chemical ingredients it will help you and your family health real big time! Please do not think that would be a too much work for you to check all the ingredients! That's for you and your family. Even just switching a laundry detergent can affect your health considerably. (Actually I have a few people who survived from cancer by not using those chemical products for their house work, laundry, cleaning, dish washing... anymore, seriously) So if you want you can download the report free without putting in any of your personal information, here:
http://wood.euleesway.com/toxicreport.html
and if there is anybody who you think is using too much chemical (toxic) products or having a serious allergy problem please send this report to them, too.
I hope it will be a big help for you and your family.

a persistant cough can lead to problems if not taken care of. I just went through that with my dog as he had a dry cough and it led to heart problems and he died from heart failure. So I would take your child and get another opinion and see what they say as don't put that off.

Do you live in a dry area? May want to try using a humidifier.
