The threee year old cat (male) and the puppy (female) mostly play. It can be irritating, but the behavior is correctable and I'm working on keeping them in line. However the old cat is scary and the puppy is markedly more aggresive with her. Also the younger cat is aggresive with her and will chase her through the house or they fight, which gets the dog all riled up. Even when the dog is caged the cats fight for position on the bed, sometimes in the middle of the night. This has become more prevalent as the older cat has become more and more frail. She is also exhibiting undesirable behaviors she would never have done when younger. The vet said cats can actually become sort of senile and outside of being moody, frail and senile, she's in farily good health for her age. To keep the peace and my sanity, should I put the old cat down or find the puppy a new home?

Sounds like the two younger animals are terrorizing your poor older cat. It is sad that an older cat is now having to compete with these younger, healthier agressive pets. Her "behaviors" are probably due to the stress she is feeling from these other animals. Can you separate them at all? Make sure that the older cat has a "safe, quiet" place to go to escape the other two animals when they are ganging up on her.

Well, having more than one pet can cause fighting amongst the pets. If I were in your shoes, I would get rid of the 16 year old cat. The three year old cat and the 8 month Bichon get along great, and I would think it would be cute to see them play together. It will make life that much easier for you since you won't have to be wasting your time getting scratched trying to stop a fight between your pets. The 16 year old cat will, sadly to say, soon be no longer living so don't you think it would be better for your feelings to know that the pet didn't die, and to know that the pet won't have to deal with the other pets of yours. Besides, does an old cat really have the energy and health to run around being chased by your other pets all day? Do what you think is right, and I'm glad I could help.

I would have more respect and love for the older cat than a new puppy. Have you put in so many years of the older cat loving you and looking to you as it's litter leader and have so little regard for her that you would heartlessly kill her?
How can you have so little regard for this animal? Or are they just possessions to you?
I am shocked at your letter and your question. When my 19 year old cat finally died, I was sad for months and still miss her. Isn't there some way for you to respect your older cat and allow the two younger ones to play and leave her alone?

To euthanize an otherwise healthy cat for convenience is, in my opinion, immoral and cruel.

I think that you should separate your older cat from the rest of your pets--like pick a big room of your house, such as your bedroom, that she can live in without being bothered by the 3 year old or the puppy.

I'm sure you love all of your pets but it does sound rather bizarre the way you said "get rid of"....You probably didn't intend on sounding heartless and you mean well. Anyway, you had some pretty good answers above. Think very hard and long before you "put down" your old cat.

I would give away the dog because probably the fighting is cat vs. dog....also the Bichon is just a puppy and will be able to find a home easier.

You put a lot on the 16 year old getting a puppy who is terrorizing.

Don't you love this kitty? Your 1st little Bud?
Geezzzzz. You be good with the older one 1st and foremost, if you have a heart.

omg i cant beleive you would consider putting your old cat down if she is in good health as you say!

i couldnt get rid of ANY of my pets even though they all fight. if it really is getting unbearable and you have no loyalties to your pets, try and seek out better homes for them. mebbe someone would look to take in your puppy or the older cat.

I find it intolerable that anyone would even consider putting an animal down to keep his or her peace and sanity! Perhaps you should consider finding all of your pets a new home!

well if your old 16 yr cat and 3yr cat are fighting you should get rid of the older cat, because even if it is healthy, it will probably get sick sooner than later, it might be hard to give it up ,but i honestly think that it would be the best for you and your animals.. hope this kind of helps!
