Does anyone else seem to have this problem? Last time he was gone I had 2 kids throwing up. This time all three have a terrible head cold. The oldest (not quite 7) also has an ear infection while the youngest (not quite 2) has a fever of 102.5.
I just want to know I am not alone in this. It is not a fun week and he will not be home until Monday night.

When my daughter was a baby, my husband's job had him on travel about three days out of every week. And inevitably those were the days when she got sick.

The worst part was when I would get sick too. I don't know how single parents do it.

But you gotta try to look at the lighter side, because the kids do grow up and eventually they are not sick every three weeks or so.

During this hellacious time, I got sick so often that I got bronchitis and my doctor had to prescribe me cough syrup with codeine in it. Man does that stuff knock you out!

Anyway, one night when I was taking this stuff I woke up in the kind of woozy frame of mind you have when your brain cells are totally out of it. In this frame of mind, I took note that my husband's side of the bed was empty, and I vaguely thought "business trip."

I was staring at the closed bedroom door when I thought I heard sounds coming from the other side. My daughter was sleeping beside me, she'd been sick and difficult to get to bed, so I'd let her sleep in our bed. So any noises outside the bedroom weren't family, as far as I knew.

I spent about two minutes getting wider and wider awake, and trying to talk myself out of believing that I really was hearing noises. Then, suddenly, a light went on on the other side of the bedroom door.

I can honestly say that I have never been so frightened in my life. As stealthily as I could, I got out of bed and made my way over to the desk in our room where the telephone was. I grabbed the phone and started to dial 911. Meanwhile, the light went out and I heard footsteps coming towards the bedroom.

The door opened but I hadn't finished dialling 911. I screamed as loud as I could, "WHO ARE YOU? WHO ARE YOU? GET AWAY!!!!"

I heard an inarticulate gasp, and then the bedroom light went on. And there stood my husband in his pajamas. Suddenly memory burned through the codeine fog. He wasn't on a business trip, he was home!

"You scared me half to death!" I moaned, and I meant it. My heart was probably doing 200+ beats per minute.

"You scared me...man am I glad I just went to the bathroom," my husband gasped back. And then he turned around and fled back to the bathroom. He told me later that he had gotten up to go pee, and that for the first time in his life he understood the phrase about scaring the cr@p out of someone.

We both can laugh at that now, it was 12 years ago. But honest to god at the time I was so scared. I know that if I'd had a gun I would have shot him.

After that, I stopped using the cough syrup with codeine. It works on the cough, no question about it, but I never, ever want to feel that woozy and out of it again.

My kids did that when I went to a new duty station or when I went to the field (military service) It cleared up when they got older. It's basically separation anxiety which is stress related. Doing special things when he leaves and other things to take thier minds off of the seperation will help quite a bit.

Perhaps they miss him, and don't want him to go, and become so stressed and worried about it that they unconsciouscly make themselves sick.
