What a person expects from a psychiatrist is often very different to what they want and get.
I have seen NUMEROUS psychiatrists over the last twenty years and basically they all do the same thing..they ask you a list of pre-determined questions..and depending on what your answers are decide what they think is wrong with you. They dispense medication like candy. All I have to do is mention a 'racing mind' and I get a 90 day supply of Topomax, You're hearing voices? Well m'dear..here's some Risperdal and a little Abilify to go along with it. Oh and some Effexor just in case you were too depressed (or drugged-up) to get out of bed this morning...
I swear..if I took all that they told me to..you could brand me with a cow poke and I'd never know the difference..
So, what do I expect from a psychiatrist? Truthfully..a big bill and a really good nights (and days) sleep. I hear people that want compassion, good listeners..etc..etc. I think they have psychologists and counselors mixed up with psychiatrists. They all charge an awful lot of money...but a psych..truly does nothing more than make diagnosis and then tend to medication management (in fact that is how they list it on the bill.)

friendly, compassionate, non condescending , easy to talk to, easy to understand, and willing to listen to you. i expect him or her to be up to date with new, medication and innovative treatment.i would expect him or her to accurately diagnose me in a reasonable amount of time, based on the symptoms that i will complain about i would also expect, if i were to go on medication to be reasonably content with my medication , in a reasonable amount of time. i would expect my doctor to explain my illness, and educate me on how to help myself, or at least refer me to the right people to help me keep well. i would like a doctor that you can make an appointment with in a reasonable time, if you need him or her, in between appointments.
