What do you prefer, a doctor that is distinguished because of its positive attitude and treatment towards patient or a doctor that has a lot of knowledge (that you are sure that he is going to find the diagnosis) but doesn't know how to treat their patient??

The option good, kind doctor, that has a lot of knowledge is not an option. I'm trying to see what is more important, how the doctor treats the patient or how much knowlegde does the doctor have (even thou his social skills are poor).

"Both' or "neither" answers are an option. Thanks!

A physician who values and respects the patient will refer to someone else when they have reached the limits of their knowledge. I would most certainly rather a doctor distinguished because of how the patient is treated. I would more likely trust that they care and are doing their best, which would include conferring with others on my behalf or sending me elsewhere.

A combination of both sounds best to me. After all there really isn`t that much to know.
How many doctors do you know would tell you that a person who loses an arm in an accident can grow a new one? Well it is now being studied since it is happening.
Just this morning while visiting one on social business, I met a child who was born with no fingers. With the help of this medical doctor, pediatrician actually, the child for starters is now growing perfectly operational ones, they were about one and a half inches, and the child looked to be about one year old. He also appeared to have almost all his teeth (actually I think he was still teething). So there are advancements being made which require learning about, many actually, but they are all based on simple laws which are easy enough to learn. Hardly any room for cynicism, is there?

Boy that is a really interesting question, especially for a GP of 30 years. I have to be honest I have always had a personal motto which says 'I'd rather be right than liked.' I try my best to be as pleasant as I can, but I am not famous for it. Many of my patients like the way I treat them, I am very keen on explanations and absolute honesty, I also really hate having to hurt people, but it doesn't suit everyone. You can never hope to please all of the people all of the time.

I definitely prefer good bedside manner - even if they don't have all the answers, they can always consult with someone else or find the answers, and if it takes a little longer so be it. I don't like going to doctors who treat you like you're just their income.

Your question reminds me of House on TV. He is a real SOB sometimes, but he has tremendous knowledge and has saved more people than he has lost. So, I guess if me or one of my loved ones was seriously ill, I would take the doctor with the knowledge and put up with his crappy bedside manner.
